The AECM Association

The initial objective of the association Les Amis de l’Eglise de la Cité Médiévale (AECM) when it was created in 2009, was to re-open the cathedral church of the Upper Town of Vaison-la-Romaine, closed for so many years and reduced to a deposit of rubbish.
After four years of hard work, AECM volunteers achieved their goal and the cathedral was opened to the public in 2013.
Restoring this magnificent building finally became possible. The City, owner of the building, represented by the Regional Directorate of Cultural Affairs (DRAC), took the matter in charge and, very logically, decided that prior to any interior restoration, the roof had to be completely restored. A second estimate of the cost of the work amounted to €600,000, the Association decided to finance it up to 30%.
To raise the funds, the AECM had launched a public subscription; this operation was coupled with the organization of concerts and exhibitions within the cathedral. The purpose was to liven it up and to make it known and loved by the general public.
